Botanical Taxonomy & the Naming of Things

Do you find the scientific grouping and naming of plants overwhelming and confusing? If you do, you aren't alone.

Deconstructing what's in a name can reveal a new way of relating to plants that is exciting and intriguing and need not be intimidating or inaccessible.

Join me, ethnobotanist Jennie Martin for a talk on the basics of modern botanical taxonomy and the scientific naming of plants. During our time together will also look at folk taxonomy and plant names and how all these labels can carry a wealth of information about the use of plants, their location, their physical characteristics and much more.

The talk will also explore themes such as 'what’s in a name?' and question whether by naming things we create more order or more chaos, inclusion or exclusion and how by understanding the names given to plants we can deepen our relationship with the natural world.

This workshop is for nature lovers, forest school leaders, bushcraft practitioners and ecologists. It’s for those with some botanical background or none… all welcome!

What I wouldn't give to spend a few hours walking in my local woods with you to make sense of it all. Please would you add me to your mailing list as I'd love to learn more."
